Parties, Plastics and Pollution – Having an Environment Friendly Christmas Party

Parties, Plastics and Pollution
It’s Christmas party time! This season creates loads of trash and solid waste beyond what is normally generated, especially with parties, cookouts, outdoor events, family reunions and other large gatherings. These activities can create more trash in our homes and environment. The spirit extends into the New Year, with the air thick with pyrotechnic smoke and mounds of garbage everywhere especially the morning after.
Before you have that drink and toss the bottle somewhere, spare 5 minutes to read Visionscape’s tips to have waste and pollution free Christmas parties, while caring for the environment.
  1. Start the evening with a toast to your guests, with a subtle reminder to recycle while they celebrate.
  2. Make recycling easy for your guests by placing recycling bins near the trash. Clearly and creatively label the bins with visible signs (preferably with words and pictures).
  3. Choose reusable party plates, utensils and cups instead of buying single-use plastics that can’t be recycled. When the party is over, put them in the dishwasher instead of trashing them off and store them till your next event.
  4. Consider themed party cups for every guest with a marker for them to write their names on. Guests normally leave with these cups and end up reusing it for months, instead of hours.
  5. Serve beverages from large bowls or dispensers instead of buying single bottles or cans of soda and water.
  6. In choosing a professional caterer, opt for one that practices environmental sustainability – providing washable plates, cups and utensils.
  7. Plan ahead and if needed, hire pick up services for proper collection of waste and recycling.
With these simple tips in mind, let us all celebrate the Christmas season, be safe and at the same time, also protect the environment. Visionscape Group wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
